Brief Outline of subject at Junior Cycle

At Junior Cycle, students will develop a love of literature as they will study a range of novels, poems and plays. English at Junior Cycle also encourages growth through creative use of language when engaging creatively and critically with a range of multimodal texts. At the core of our lessons is also an appreciation and understanding of the grammar conventions of English to promote effective communication. Students can take the subject at Higher Level or Ordinary Level but both options require students to take part in two CBAs(Classroom Based Assessments) which will form part of their JCPA. The course also requires students to study two novels, a range of poems, two plays and one film along with a range of language styles and media studies.

Brief Outline of subject at Senior Cycle

Leaving Certificate English is taken by all students and tests your expression and your comprehension. Each year you will have to cover a prescribed set of poets, plays, and works of fiction. In the exam it is important to work to the clock and get your timings correct so that you get all questions finished. Pay attention to your vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and handwriting as this all will play a part in how the examiner marks your exam. Finally, don’t forget to study Paper 1. there is just as much potential for practice and preparation as the studied material on Paper 2. The subject at Transition Year

At the core of English in Transition Year is creativity. Students engage in creative writing tasks and are encouraged to take chances and be experimental with language. There is also a focus on preparation for the Leaving Cert course with a focus on language styles, media studies and comparative language and tasks. Students in Transition Year will also use the language through debate and public speaking.
