CASTLEPOLLARD COMMUNITY COLLEGE

History

Brief Outline of subject at Junior Cycle

The study of history at Junior Cycle is about exploring human experience over time and how that experience has shaped the world we live in today. By asking questions of available evidence, students of history can make rational, informed judgements about human actions in the past and examine why people were motivated to act as they did and the effects of these actions. The study of history instils in students a respect for integrity, objectivity and looking at issues from different perspectives. Students will study 3 interconnected strands. Strand 1: The nature of history; Strand 2: The history of Ireland; Strand 3: The history of Europe and the wider world.

Brief Outline of subject at Senior Cycle

The study of History at Senior Cycle involves the study of human life in the past, bringing students into contact with human experiences often very different to their own. There will be in-depth study of a number of historical topics with emphasis on developing certain skills, in particular research skills, learning to work with evidence and developing the ability to think critically. Students will study the ‘Later Modern’ period (1815-1993) by exploring two topics from Irish History and two topics from the history of Europe and the Wider World.

The subject at Transition Year

Photography and new digital media are explored in Transition Year. The curriculum ensures that students acquire new skills, knowledge and understanding beyond their everyday experiences, allowing them to make sense of the world around them.
